There has been a Karate Club in Goxhill since the early 1980's. At that time it was run by Arthur Newby Sensei 2nd Dan, under Kato Sensei 8th Dan. The club practised Shotokan and was part of the Kodokai Association. Kato Sensei would conduct regular gradings at the Goxhill Dojo and would leave the Japanese connection in the club. To train and grade with such a master leaves a solid foundation to build on, whatever style you choose.
When the club folded, it was re-opened as part of the AMA in 2001 by Paul Howson and John Gouldthorpe. Paul started back training but now it was shukokai, although frustrated at times after what he had been used too and being limited to how far he could go the main instructor packed in. In 2002 Paul joined SSU and trained under Sensei Tony Grainger (6th Dan) at his clubs in Hull. Tony agreed to oversee the club at Goxhill and to be the grading officer for the club. He continues to train at Goxhill every Wednesday.
Goxhill Karate Club now has over 35 members, ranging from 6 to 60 years. It held a successful Women's Self-Defence Course in 2005, and many of the women who took the course stayed on to study Karate.
